What is Implant? How is Implant Treatment Performed?

Implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed in the jawbone and provide support to the teeth with prostheses. Thanks to this procedure and the prosthesis placed, the chewing ability increases. Thanks to the titanium screws placed inside the jawbone, prostheses can be attached. In this article, we will provide detailed information to our patients who frequently ask the question "What does an implant mean?"

Implant treatment: It is an artificial root application for individuals who have lost their teeth due to various reasons, in order to regain the aesthetics and function caused by missing teeth or teeth. These screwed teeth are called “implant teeth”.

The dental implant surface consists of titanium, which has the highest compatibility with soft tissue and bone. It is cylindrical in shape and has different lengths and diameters. Tooth transplantation is performed in a single session with a surgical operation and accompanied by local anesthesia. After the patient is evaluated in terms of bone compatibility, systemic diseases, social habits, and hygiene habits before the application, dental implant application is decided. As a result of various x-rays taken, the dimensions of the implant to be applied are determined. There is a waiting period of 3-4 months after the application. At the end of this period, prosthesis over the implant begins.

In addition to implant treatment, you can have healthy and white teeth thanks to our teeth whitening service.

In Which Situations Is Dental Implant Applied?

- Single tooth deficiencies: With the classical method, a single tooth deficiency can be eliminated by wearing the adjacent two teeth in a funny way and constructing a 3-membered bridge supported by them. In this case, with a single implant to be made, a more aesthetic and more functional treatment is performed without touching the neighboring teeth.

- Complete edentulous state (total edentulous): Total prosthesis (palate) applied in case of total edentulism is the type of prosthesis with the weakest retention in the mouth. The fact that it is dislocated at various degrees during chewing and speaking negatively affects the comfort of the patient. In patients with sufficient bone levels, at least 5-6 implants are applied to each jaw and a fixed prosthesis is made on them. Secondly, in cases where the bone levels are not good, an implant is applied to the anterior region and a removable prosthesis is made that supports these implants. In this option, the aim is to increase the retention of the removable prosthesis and to facilitate the use of the patient.

- Jaws with toothless posterior ends: This makes bridge construction impossible. In order to make a bridge in tooth deficiencies, the missing part must be above and eventually the patient's own tooth. For this reason, removable prosthesis (half palate) is applied in edentulous jaws. In patients who refuse to use removable dentures, fixed prosthesis can be made by applying implants to edentulous areas.

- In cases of long edentulism: Even if the patient has natural teeth at the beginning and end of the edentulous area, bridge application cannot be done because it will be too long. Because there is a danger of breaking and stretching on long bridges. In addition, the life of the teeth to be used as a bridge foot will be shortened as it will carry more than it will carry. In such cases, a more functional and long-lasting prosthesis is made by implanting the long space.

What are the types of implants?

Today, there are many types of implants. However, it is the most common type of screw-shaped implant. The type of implant used depends on the patient's jawbone and supporting tissue. What are the different types of implants and how to apply implants according to these types:

- Endosteal Implant: It is a type of implant used when one or more teeth are missing. It is used in the inner part of the jawbone. It is one of the most commonly used implant types today. It is classified as screwed, bladed and cylindrical.

- Subperiosteal Implant: These implants are prepared by taking bone measurements. Thanks to these implants, the chewing force is distributed to the entire jawbone. They are in the form of a cage. It is one of the most popular types of implants.

- Intramucosal Implant: This is a type of titanium implant. They are used to improve prosthesis retention, but are not widely used today.

- Endodontic implant: It is a type of implant tooth used to repair weak tooth structures. It is used to create a strong jaw structure.

- Transmandibular implant: It is a type of implant used to correct bone volume deficiencies. Since it is a difficult form of treatment, it is not widely used today.

To Whom Can Implant Be Applied?

We answered the question of what is an implant. So, to whom can implant treatment be applied? Individuals who want to have implant treatment must have completed the age of 18. In addition, the development of the face and jaw must be completed in order to apply the treatment and get maximum efficiency. Before treatment, it is determined whether people are suitable for implant treatment. First of all, the suitability of the jaw structure for implant treatment is checked. For this, x-rays are taken and the jaw structure and bone level are examined by the physician. If the person who will have the implant has diabetes, this situation is checked first. Before treatment, the disease should be followed regularly. In addition, people using blood thinners should stop taking the drug a while before taking the treatment.

In Which Situations Can Implant Treatment Be Applied?

Implant; It is a dental treatment that is applied to eliminate the deficiency of permanent teeth. With the implant treatment, it is aimed to regain the former aesthetic appearance of the area and to make it capable of chewing again. It can be applied in almost any situation if there is an empty space in the jawbone.

On the other hand, an implant is a treatment applied in a broken tooth. Implant treatment planning can be made for broken teeth that cannot be saved and which are decided to be extracted. However, in this case, it may be necessary to wait for a while for the gums to heal and the extraction cavity to be filled with bone.

How is Implant Made?

Implant treatment; It is performed under local anesthesia, which is used in the field of dentistry. After detailed examination and examinations, implant treatment can be applied to people. Let's talk about how implant teeth are made.

- First of all, some images (panoramic x-ray, regional tomography) are taken from the patient in order to determine the thickness, width, density of the jawbone, and the gap and nerve passages close to the region.

- The size and thickness of the implant is decided with the help of these images.

- Two different techniques are generally followed for the placement of dental implants. After the implant is placed in the process known as one-stage, the healing cap for the gingiva is placed.

- In this method, the healing cap is visible in the implanted area after the operation. In this way, the healing process is expected.

- In the other two-stage method, after the dental implant application, the area is covered with the gingiva. Nothing about the implant is visible during the healing process.

- After the healing is completed and the implant is fused to the bone, the top of the implant is opened and the gingival healing cap is attached.

Which of the two methods will be applied is decided by looking at the patient's oral care, whether he has a systemic disease and smoking and alcohol use. In both treatment methods, temporary teeth can be placed according to the suitability of the mouth. The healing process in question can take up to 3 months for the lower jaw and 4-5 months for the upper jaw. The most important factor in determining the duration of this period, which is called the waiting or recovery period, is bone hardness. In some cases, newly made teeth can be placed on dental implants immediately.
